On October 3, 1962, astronaut Walter Schirra wore a Speedmaster CK 2998 he had purchased himself during the Mercury Project Sigma 7 mission, becoming the first OMEGA watch to be worn in space. The latest model pays homage to this pioneering watch, embodying the design essence of the second-generation Speedmaster and creating a perfect modern classic.
The 39.70mm diameter case is crafted from polished and brushed stainless steel, and features a flat-link bracelet equipped with OMEGA’s patented Comfort Adjustment System. The black aluminum bezel features a classic tachymeter scale and the iconic Dot Over Ninety scale.
The watch features a new carbon fiber-effect sapphire crystal. The grey-blue dial, a reminiscent of the distinctive hue of several CK 2998 models from the 1960s, is treated with a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) coating. The indexes and beveled hour and minute hands are treated with a vintage-style luminescent coating, while the central baton-shaped seconds hand is finished in white luminescent paint, complementing the transferred indices. The watch features three subdials: a 30-minute counter at 3 o’clock, a 12-hour counter at 6 o’clock, and a small seconds counter at 9 o’clock.
The dial and crown are decorated with vintage-style OMEGA logos, and the case back is engraved with the famous Seahorse emblem and the words “THE FIRST OMEGA IN SPACE” and “OCTOBER 3, 1962”.
The watch is equipped with the Co-Axial Master Chronometer Calibre 3861, the latest version of the Calibre 321 used by astronauts during their space missions. Each watch is presented in a special box containing a “LEGENDARY MOONWATCH” information leaflet.
